This qualification is ideal for people seeking entry to the waste and resource management sector, or those who are already working and planning to progress to a senior job role. It is a flexible qualification that can be tailored to meet the requirements of specific job roles in the sector or within a particular organisation – these job roles include: 

• Refuse collection supervisor 
• Transfer station supervisor 
• Sustainability officer 
• Treatment supervisor 
• Landfill supervisor 
• Materials recycling facility supervisor

This qualification is open entry. This means that learners interested in undertaking the CIWM (WAMITAB) Level 3 Certificate in Principles of Sustainable Resource Management do not require any other qualifications or levels of attainment to take this qualification.

This CIWM (WAMITAB) Level 3 Certificate in Principles of Sustainable Resource Management is assessed using variable methods of assessment, which ultimately depend on the units selected.

The qualification process would include a number of visits by one of our competent Assessors. 

The first assessment visit will include an induction, to explain the process, as well as the Centre and awarding organisation’s policies, practices and procedures. 

Each Learner will need to complete the 8 mandatory units. They will then select either the general pathway, or reuse pathway completing the units specified below. 

Learners who choose the General Pathway will complete units covering topics such as policy, legislation, environmental permitting, systems, and technologies used in resource management. 

Learners who choose the Reuse Pathway will complete units covering the refurbishment, reuse and transportation of materials in a retail environment. This pathway is used primarily for those seeking employment, or working within the third (not-for-profit) sector, for instance, in charity shops. 

Those selecting the general pathway, will need to complete 7 of the units from optional group B ensuring 6 out of the 7 units are at least Level 3 or above. 

Those selecting the reuse pathway, will need to complete the 2 mandatory re-use units and then 1 unit from reuse optional group A, if you select CK3 or CK2 you must select an additional unit from reuse group A.

You will then select 2 units from reuse optional group B and 1 unit from reuse optional group C in order to achieve the reuse pathway.

• How to work safely within the waste/recycling industry (AM1) 
• Understand Environmental Protection in the waste and recycling industry (AM2) 
• How to identify and resolve disagreements (AM3) 
• Understand the principles of the waste/recycling industry (AM4)
• Understand the principles of identifying and classifying waste (AM5) 
• Understand the ‘Duty of Care’ within the waste/recycling industry (AM6)
• Plan, allocate and monitor work of a team (MSCD5) 
• ERR (Employment Rights and Responsibilities) in the Energy & Utility Sector (ERR) 

General Pathway - Optional Group B:

The learner must complete 7 Units ensuring 6 of the units are at least Level 3 or above:

• Understand the requirements for the transportation of waste - Level 3 (AO3)
• Understand Management Systems - Level 3 (AO4)
• Know about Waste Treatment Technologies - Level 3 (AO5) 
• Technical Aspects of Managing Waste and Resources - Level 3 (AO6)
• Understand planning requirements in the waste/recycling industry - Level 3 (AO7)
• How to identify and record Hazardous waste - Level 3 (AO8)
• Understand Environmental Permitting in England and Wales - Level 3 (AO9)
• Understand the reasons and targets for Recycling - Level 2 (A02)
• Understand operational systems and procedures in the waste/recycling industry - Level 2 (CK1)
• Know the Materials arising within the waste and recycling industry - Level 2 (CK2)
• Know how to maintain confidentiality of information within the waste/recycling industry - Level 2 (CK3)
• Perform street cleansing manually - Level 2 (C2.18)
• Perform street cleansing mechanically - Level 2 (C2.19)

Reuse Pathway - Mandatory Unit Group  

The learner must complete all of the units from the following group: 

• Understanding Customer Service in the Retail Sector (SR1) 
• Understanding the Retail Selling Process (SR2) 

Reuse Optional Unit Group A  

The learner must complete 1 unit from this group, if you select CK3 or CK2 you must select an additional unit:

• Understanding the requirement for the transportation of waste (A03)
• Understanding management systems (A04)
• Know how to maintain confidentiality of information within the waste/recycling industry (CK3)
• Know the materials arising within the waste and recycling industry (CK2) 

Reuse Optional Unit Group B  

The learner must complete 2 units the following group: 

• Technical Aspects of managing waste and resources (A06)
• Understand planning requirements in the waste/recycling industry (A07) 
• How to identify and record hazardous waste (A08) 
• Understanding management systems (A04) 

Reuse Optional Unit Group C  

The learner must complete 1 unit the following group: 

• Understanding the control, receipt and storage of stock in retail business (SR3)
• Understanding the development of personal and team effectiveness in a retail business (SR4)
• Understanding retail consumer law (SR5)

As part of the process, you will be required to complete a minimum of 14 units, dependant on the pathway and units selected within each optional unit group. 

Due to the variation in units, some require you to complete a knowledge question paper in order to achieve the unit, which the assessor will test as part of the process to ensure it's your work and you fully understand the required subjects. 

Other units are based around performance, common examples are completing and submitting near miss reports, mobile plant or machinery defects, as well as carrying out team meetings, planning work tasks and allocation of work etc. 

Don’t worry, you will plan each assessment visit with your Assessor to allow time to complete the work required! 

When your Assessor arrives on site, he or she will be looking to observe you carrying out your daily duties, asking questions about the tasks you carry out, looking at the documentation and getting you to explain the various processes and procedures. 

On completion, the Centre will claim your certificate, which will be scanned, and a copy sent in advance of the original certificate.

Additional Charges:

£600 + VAT - Per additional assessment visit, this is typically required where the assessor has confirmed an assessment within 7 days, and then turns up on site and the learner has either done nothing or the assessment can’t go ahead as the learner has meetings or other work which takes priority over the assessment. 

However, to date we have never charged a client for an extra assessment visit which is down to the rigorous planning and support we provide our learners.

Your portfolio will be located online, which you can access through any website browser via a laptop, computer or mobile device.

Here you can access your knowledge question papers, completing them online and submitting them for marking, with one simple click of a button, which will also notify your Assessor automatically!  We also provide access to a huge archive of guidance documents on a range of health, safety, waste and environmental subjects.

This will not only help you research and learn in order to achieve the award, but it’s also the ideal on-site reference tool, when carrying out your daily duties.

Yes, you need access to an operational facility with the required resource, as the assessment phase is completed in the working environment. 

Operational facility examples: metal recycling sites, transfer stations, landfills, or sites involved in deposit for recovery. 

Resource examples: people/staff, vehicles, mobile plant, procedures, assessments, products, or materials.

Yes, we can arrange for one of our trainers to deliver an underpinning knowledge course. 

Designed to deliver knowledge in a range of areas, prior to your allocated assessor taking over and starting the assessment phase. 

This can speed up the completion time frame as well as ensuring you have a good solid foundation of knowledge. 

These qualifications are led by the Learner, with support from their Assessor. 

It’s hard to give an accurate time frame, as it will depend on a range of factors, such as completing work set by their Assessor, existing knowledge and experience, and workload to name but a few. 

We would however expect a learner to complete this qualification in around 6 to 8 months.
