VRQ407 – Principles and practices of managing a biological treatment processing facility (Anaerobic Digestion, Composting and Treatment of Non-Hazardous Sludge)


This optional unit is suitable for a range of sites in the Medium risk tier of the CIWM (WAMITAB) Operator Competence Scheme.


It covers a number of biological treatment activities, making it a cost-effective and informative route for those involved in the biological treatment of waste. 


Ideal for those who operate environmental permits carrying out Anaerobic Digestion, Open Windrow or In-vessel Composting or Treatment of non-hazardous sludge. 


The initial training course covers a range of aspects from waste acceptance and rejection of loads, biological treatment of waste, emissions, technical and environmental benefits, problems associated with the biological treatment of waste, records, and much more! 


On completion of the 5 mandatory units and optional unit VRQ407, the individual can act as the technically competent manager (TCM) of the below site types: 


• Composting in open windrows / Composting biodegradable wastes

• Composting in closed vessels / Composting biodegradable wastes

• Anaerobic digestion facility including use of the resultant biogas

• On farm anaerobic digestion facilities including the use of the resultant biogas 

• Storage of wastes to be used in land treatment

• Non-hazardous sludge – biological, chemical and physical treatment
