VRQ406 – Principles and practices of managing a physical treatment processing facility (Transfer and Treatment of non-hazardous waste)


This optional unit is suitable for a range of sites in both the Medium and Low-risk tier of the CIWM (WAMITAB) Operator Competence Scheme.


Ideal for those who operate transfer stations for a range of waste from wood, municipal or mixed non-hazardous or inert wastes, to general skip hire. 


The training course covers a range of aspects from waste acceptance and rejection of loads, treatment of waste, emissions, technical and environmental benefits, problems associated with the physical treatment of waste, records and much more! 


On completion of the 5 mandatory units and optional unit VRQ406, the individual can act as the technically competent manager (TCM) of the below site types: 


• Non-hazardous transfer with treatment (not otherwise specified)

• Use of waste to manufacture timber or construction products

• Treatment of waste wood for recovery

• Material recovery facilities

• Non-hazardous transfer without treatment

• Civic amenity (CA) sites / Household waste recycling centres (HWRC) – Non-Hazardous and Hazardous.

• In-house storage of non-hazardous waste

• Mobile plant for treatment of waste to produce soil, soil substitutes and aggregate 

• Treatment of waste to produce soil, soil substitutes and aggregate 

• Inert transfer
